Event Summary
Narrative
Severe weather preceded and accompanied a cold front as it passed through southeastern New York. There were numerous reports of relatively small hail (0.5 inch in diameter) occurring with these thunderstorms. A couple of locations observed very large hail on the order of 1.5 inches. In Oceanside, this large hail damaged a greenhouse. Powerful winds downed numerous trees and power lines across the area. On Long Island Sound, a boat struck by lightning was substantially damaged by fire. In addition, several reports of funnel clouds were received. At first it was thought that a couple of these may have touched the ground, but after examining the sites, this was not confirmed. Torrential rains accompanying these thunderstorms caused localized but substanstial urban flooding in Richmond, Kings, Nassau, and Queens Counties during the evening hours.
