Narrative
High winds, hail and torrential rain, moving eastward through the area, produced widespread damage. Massive tree damage occurred. Some trees as old as 75 years were uprooted. Several homes and businesses received substantial damage. Golf ball size hail fell in Woodside, Queens where winds estimated at 65 MPH also occured. Six persons were injured at the U.S. Open Tennis championship in Flushing Meadow when a large hospitality tent was blown down. A woman was injured in Floral Park, Nassau County when a tree fell on her car, trapping her. Trees falling across power lines left 85000 residents without electricity.
